Covered Walkways for Schools, Hospitals and Business Sites
Weather-protected walkways connecting buildings across your site. UK-manufactured, custom lengths and colours, free site survey. DfE-funded school projects welcome.
Keep Everyone Dry Between Buildings
Our covered walkways create weather-protected routes between buildings, keeping staff, pupils, patients, and visitors comfortable whatever the British weather brings. No more dashing between buildings in the rain or navigating icy paths in winter.
Designed for multi-building sites where people regularly move between locations. Popular with schools connecting classrooms to dining halls, hospitals linking wards to departments, and business parks joining office blocks to amenity buildings.
Every walkway is custom-manufactured to your exact site dimensions and requirements. Choose your width (2m-4m standard), add side panels for wind protection, integrate LED lighting for evening use, and specify any RAL colour to match existing buildings.

The Benefits of Covered Walkways
Improve Site Accessibility
Create all-weather pedestrian routes ensuring your site remains accessible whatever the weather. This is particularly important for schools (no wet pupils tracking mud indoors), hospitals (vulnerable patients), and care facilities (elderly residents).
Reduce Maintenance Costs
Fewer muddy footprints, less wet-weather cleaning, and reduced wear on carpets near entrances. Covered walkways keep mess outside and significantly reduce indoor cleaning requirements during wet periods.
Enhance Site Appeal
Well-designed covered walkways improve the overall appearance and professionalism of your site. They demonstrate care for user experience and attention to facility quality, which is valued by visitors, parents, and prospective clients.
Support Safeguarding
For schools, covered walkways ensure pupils remain on-site when moving between buildings, reducing risks associated with crossing open areas or parking zones. They also improve supervision visibility in all weather conditions.
Covered Walkways for Schools: DfE Funding Available
If your school has access to School Condition Allocations (SCA), the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF), or is part of the government's School Rebuilding Programme, a covered walkway may qualify as a funded infrastructure improvement. The DfE's Education Estates Strategy (February 2026) commits to the largest school capital investment since 2010 β hundreds of schools are in the programme right now.
We work with school business managers and MAT estates teams throughout the procurement process. We can provide specifications, drawings, and 3D visuals to support funding applications.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about covered walkways
How long can covered walkways be?
There's no maximum length - we connect modular bay sections to achieve any required distance. Most walkways range from 10m to 40m, though we've installed walkways exceeding 100m for large sites. Each bay is typically 3-4m long, with intermediate posts for structural support.
Do walkways need side panels or can they be open-sided?
Your choice. Open-sided walkways are most cost-effective and provide overhead weather protection. However, many clients add polycarbonate or metal side panels on one or both sides for additional wind and rain protection. This is particularly beneficial in exposed locations or for walkways facing prevailing winds.
Can walkways follow curved routes or navigate slopes?
Yes to both. Curved walkways can be designed to any radius to follow site boundaries or navigate around obstacles. For sloping sites, we adjust post heights to maintain level rooflines or create ramped walkways that follow ground contours while maintaining accessibility standards.
What width should we choose?
2m width suits single-file pedestrian traffic (e.g., pupils moving between lessons). 3m width allows comfortable two-way traffic. 4m width is recommended for high-traffic routes, wheelchair users passing, or where school groups need to move together. We can advise based on your expected usage.
How are walkways anchored - do we need foundations?
Posts can be bolted to existing concrete or tarmac using resin anchors (quickest and most common method). Alternatively, we can install ground sockets into new concrete foundations. For grass or soil, ground sockets are essential. We provide foundation specifications with all quotations.
Can walkways be lit for evening use?
Absolutely. We can integrate LED lighting strips into the framework or fit LED downlights at regular intervals. This is essential for schools with evening activities, hospitals with 24-hour operation, or business parks where staff work late. Lighting is low-energy, low-maintenance, and improves safety significantly.
Do covered walkways require planning permission?
Most covered walkways don't require planning permission as they're typically considered permitted development. However, this can vary depending on location (conservation areas, listed buildings) and walkway size. We recommend checking with your local planning authority, and we can provide drawings if required.
How long does installation take?
A typical 20m walkway takes 2-3 days to install. This includes setting posts, assembling the framework, fitting roofing panels, and any optional extras like side panels or lighting. Longer walkways or complex multi-junction designs may take 4-5 days. We work efficiently to minimise site disruption.
Can schools use DfE funding to pay for a covered walkway?
Yes, in many cases. Schools with School Condition Allocations (SCA) can use that devolved budget for covered walkways as part of their estates improvement programme. Schools without SCA can apply to the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF), which funds capital improvements to school buildings and outdoor infrastructure. Schools in the government's School Rebuilding Programme may also have covered walkways specified as part of their new design brief. We can provide specifications, drawings, and 3D visuals to support funding applications. Speak to your school business manager or MAT estates team β we are happy to assist with the paperwork.
How do academy trusts and MATs procure covered walkways?
Multi-Academy Trusts typically procure through their own estates procurement framework or through a central buying organisation such as the Crown Commercial Service (CCS) or an approved DfE framework. We can work within existing procurement frameworks or provide a direct quotation depending on your trust's requirements. We recommend getting in touch early β we can provide specifications and 3D visuals that help your estates team build the business case before formal procurement begins.
Do covered walkways qualify as capital expenditure for NHS trusts?
Covered walkways installed at NHS or healthcare sites are generally treated as capital expenditure under NHS financial accounting, meaning they are funded from capital budgets rather than revenue. NHS estates managers should check their current capital budget allocation and consult with their finance team. We are experienced in working with NHS procurement teams and can provide the technical specifications and supporting documentation required for NHS capital purchase approvals.
